CREEK FIRE

EVACUATION RESOURCES

image: Merced Fire Department

(information updated 9/9/20)

We know that some are questioning why the fairgrounds has not yet opened, but please know that the Madera District Fair stands ready to serve our community.

In a disaster such as the Creek Fire, a unified and coordinated response is the most important thing that can be done to keep resources and assistance flowing to those in the need. Currently, the fairgrounds is just one of many resources that are at the disposal of the Madera County Sheriff’s Department, Office of Emergency Services, CalFire and Red Cross. With other properties currently in use, by opening the fairgrounds the resources at the County’s disposal would be spread too thin and ultimately would make the process of assisting evacuees much more difficult. Additionally, the Madera Fairgrounds has historically been used by CalFire as a rally point for equipment and personnel when moving between fires across the state and if our facility is being used for evacuees then this function would be much more difficult to fill for CalFire.

We want you to know that we are working closely with the Madera County Sheriff’s Department and will be ready to open to open when the current evacuation resources need to be expanded to our location.

We want to thank those who are working hard on the front lines protecting our community and those who have been supporting them. Please stay safe and take care of each other.
